Outdoor Area Unveiled at Worcester Cathedral
A new outdoor space valued at £20,000 has been officially unveiled at the historic 10th century Worcester Cathedral. Situated at the main north entrance in College Yard, the area has undergone a significant transformation led by Fitzgerald Contractors Ltd. The project represents an important upgrade to the Cathedral grounds, which remain a central and much-visited part of Worcester’s cultural and spiritual landscape.
Accessibility
The works form part of a wider effort to improve access and usability in and around the Cathedral precincts, with particular focus placed on creating open, accessible, and welcoming spaces for both residents and visitors to the city. In delivering this transformation, Fitzgerald Contractors specified a combination of EverEdge Titan and EverEdge Halestem steel landscape edging products for use throughout the hard landscaping elements of the project.
Titan Heavy-Duty Steel Edging
EverEdge Titan heavy-duty steel edging was supplied in 6.0mm thick galvanised steel and installed to form a durable and long-lasting edge around a new central meeting area in the heart of College Yard. The edging defines the boundary between multiple surface materials, including more than 7,000 carefully laid basalt setts, areas of resin bonded gravel, and original river cobbles that contribute to the character and heritage of the site. The Titan range is specifically designed for projects requiring strength, resilience and precise definition over large areas of heavy use, making it an appropriate choice for such a historically significant and publicly accessible location.
Halestem L Shaped Steel Edging
In addition to the Titan installation, EverEdge Halestem L shaped steel edging was also specified as part of the project. Halestem was used to create clean, flowing curves along new resin bonded footpaths, which have been designed to enhance pedestrian movement between the city centre and the Cathedral. These paths form part of a wider plan to guide visitors naturally toward a central meeting point, reinforcing the Cathedral’s position as both a spiritual centre and an integral part of the city’s social fabric.
Project History
Installation work began in 2024 and reached completion in July 2025. Throughout the project, EverEdge worked in close coordination with the team at Fitzgerald Contractors to ensure all steel landscape edging was manufactured, delivered and installed within the required timeline and to a consistently high standard. Timing was critical due to the public nature of the space and the desire to avoid disruption during key periods in the Cathedral’s calendar.
Supporting British Manufacturing and Heritage
EverEdge products are manufactured entirely in the United Kingdom using British steel and skilled domestic labour. The opportunity to contribute to the enhancement of such a notable and historic British landmark reflects a commitment to both quality and heritage. Supplying a project of this significance underscores the importance of durable, well-engineered edging solutions in preserving and improving spaces of national importance.
The completed works at Worcester Cathedral reflect the importance of considered, durable landscaping in spaces of cultural and historical value. Through collaboration with Fitzgerald Contractors, the Cathedral now benefits from long-lasting, visually cohesive landscaping solutions that respect the site’s significance and serve its community well. EverEdge remains proud to support projects that celebrate British craftsmanship and architectural legacy, and this installation at Worcester Cathedral stands as a strong example of both.
