The Mill House is a high-dependency care facility located in Norfolk, supporting residents with a range of complex medical and mobility needs. As part of a major site-wide refurbishment, EverEdge was commissioned to supply and install our ProEdge garden edging system throughout the facility’s external communal spaces.
The project called for a durable, low-maintenance solution that would enhance safety, support accessibility and deliver a clean, integrated appearance across pathways, lawns and planting zones. Working alongside landscape contractors and facility managers, we developed and implemented a detailed edging strategy tailored to the unique demands of a care home setting.
Designing for Accessibility and Safety
Care home landscapes are more than visual features. They are essential to resident wellbeing. Outdoor spaces must be calm, functional and welcoming, supporting physical activity, social interaction and therapeutic engagement. These environments also carry stringent design requirements, especially where mobility, visual clarity and surface safety are concerned.
Traditional edging products can introduce risks. Raised edges, exposed fixings or uneven joints may pose trip hazards or interfere with mobility aids. In response, EverEdge ProEdge was chosen for its flush-fit profile, smooth lines and proven stability over time. Installed at surface level, ProEdge enables wheelchairs, walkers and staff equipment to transition smoothly across hard and soft surfaces.
The edging system was applied to a range of landscape features, including perimeter lawns, gravel walkways and low-level planting beds, defining landscape zones without compromising accessibility.
Fit for High-Use Environments
Unlike residential gardens, care home spaces are in near-constant use. They must withstand high daily footfall, repeated use of wheelchairs and trolleys and exposure to shifting weather conditions. EverEdge ProEdge is manufactured from galvanised steel and coated for added resilience, ensuring long-term strength with no warping, cracking or movement.
For this project, the team selected brown steel edging to blend naturally with the site’s planting palette and brick-built architecture. The warm, muted tone helps the edging disappear visually into the landscape while maintaining clearly defined structure, particularly helpful for residents with cognitive or visual impairments.
Collaborative Detailing On Site
From the outset, we worked closely with the appointed landscape contractors to ensure our installation aligned with the wider renovation programme. Detailed drawings and product specifications were issued during the planning phase, allowing precise coordination with paving layouts, drainage infrastructure and planting zones.
Where curves, elevation changes or path junctions were required, we supplied flexible ProEdge lengths that could be shaped and secured on site without the need for specialist cutting or heat forming. This allowed for efficient progress without compromise to design intent or accessibility performance.
Installation was phased in line with ongoing works inside the care facility, ensuring continuous access and minimal disruption for residents and staff. As with all EverEdge systems, the modular construction allows for quick, secure fitting and clean visual results.
Supporting an Accessible Garden Design
A key goal of the Mill House refurbishment was to create a garden that would encourage confident outdoor use by residents. Raised beds were introduced to bring planting up to seated height, while wider walkways and circular paths encouraged movement and reduced congestion.
Our garden edging played a key role in reinforcing this design. By keeping soil, gravel and turf neatly contained, the edging preserves the layout over time and reduces the maintenance burden on facilities teams. Clean separation also assists those with reduced sight in distinguishing between different surfaces and planting areas.
In zones where therapeutic planting schemes were introduced, such as herb beds and seasonal flowering displays, EverEdge ProEdge helped maintain consistent bed profiles and created subtle, unobtrusive edging that supports resident interaction.
Maintenance-Free Longevity
Ongoing maintenance is a major concern for facility operators. Repeated repairs or edge realignment can introduce safety issues, add cost and cause disruption for vulnerable users. That is why EverEdge ProEdge was chosen for its robust finish, minimal upkeep and exceptional service life.
The system resists corrosion, retains its position under regular use and supports groundskeeping with its ability to contain mulch, gravel and turf within clean zones. This not only ensures long-term visual appeal but also contributes to efficient resource management across the site.
Following the installation, the care home management team reported strong satisfaction with both the installation process and the finished results. The edging has helped maintain a tidy, coherent appearance while supporting the accessibility and inclusivity aims of the redesign.
